If you are flying into Bangkok especially for the Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan you are probably wondering how to get to the island. A couple of options are available, and one would be to take an internal flight to Koh Samui.
However, if you have a little more time, then an ideal way to get to the party island is firstly to take a train from Bangkok to Surat Thani and then a ferry directly from Surat to Koh Phangan.
There are a couple of advantages for the first time visitor to Thailand to do this. The first one is to partake in an adventurous train journey through the Thai countryside, passing through rural communities and also to get over your jet lag.
At your destination which is Surat Thani, you can spend a day or two relaxing in preparation of your big party ahead and explore some Thai culture for the first time.
Bangkok - Surat
Your train journey begins at Hualanphong Train Station in Bangkok, where you will board an overnight train on Thai Railways Southern Line. There are two choices of tickets, and first class consists of a private two-berth compartment with washbasin. For those on a budget, second class has berths either side of the aisle with a bathroom at the end of the carriage.
The journey takes around twelve hours before finally arriving at your destination which is Phun Phin Station in Surat Thani.
As you can imagine, Surat is a major transport hub in the south of Thailand. Most tourists that visit Surat are transients heading on somewhere else. However, the town is definitely worth spending a couple of days before moving on to your beach location.
If you head down to the old Ban Don area of town you will be surprised to see European styled architecture mixed with influences from China and Siam. The Tapi riverfront area is quite enchanting with old Chinese tea shops, bakeries and some stunning temples.
For those lovers of the great outdoors a trip to Tai Rom Yen National Park is well worthwhile, with beautiful waterfalls and menacing mountains. Whilst Chiew Lan Lake is surrounded by some of the most ancient rainforests on earth.
Don Sak pier is around 60 kilometers from Surat Town and it is there you can board your ferry to take you directly to Koh Phangan.
