If you know everything about Phuket, give this article a chance to surprise you! We bet there are still amazing things you haven’t explored in Phuket and maybe haven’t even heard of yet. So, Phuket being the biggest island has everything you can imagine of the vacation in Thailand. Besides, crazy parties and busy streets, Phuket hides a lot of wonders not many people have experienced.
Every year in the middle of October, there is a big J-festival (also called vegetarian festival) when the whole country is covered with small yellow flags and people are wearing yellow. During this time all Chinese-Thai people are sticking to a vegetarian diet, avoiding drinking and other activities that make your body unhealthy and unclean. Chinese-Thai Buddhist believe that this ritual cleans the body of people so they can host the holy spirit. Before the festival begins 11 holy spirits choose the cleanest bodies and enter them for the time of the festival. Phuket is the place where the biggest parade of spirits is held every year. Being not a touristy thing to do, Thai people don’t usually spread the word about this event, trying to avoid crowds of tourists and preserving this holiday for locals.
Every morning during the festival, all the spirits are walking around the central streets of Phuket Old Town with the spikes and knives pierced through their bodies and giving away blessing to all the people around who deserve it. At the end of the day, the spirits gather together and go through suffering to clear the world from sins to make it a better place. The unique ceremony takes place only in Old Town Phuket and attracts thousands of journalists and photographers to imprint mysterious Buddhist rituals. Next year you can see this amazing and unexplained process that definitely gives you creeps but also enriches your horizon.
