What can be so surprising about Phuket? We all heard those stories about Bangla Road parties, Patong beach, lady-boys and exotic shows. To tell you the truth, you will definitely find it everywhere in Thailand, if you really want to. But there are some unique things in Phuket, other than what you’ve heard before, that makes Phuket the most unique destination in Thailand.
Once a year in the middle of October, Thailand celebrates one of the most important religious holidays that are accompanied by the vegetarian festival. Write down the name, it’s called J festival. For three weeks Thai people who have Chinese Buddist roots reject meet and turn into vegetarians. All around Thailand you will see yellow flags which mean that this place serves vegetarian food. But the main thing about this festival is its spirituality. Thai people believe that rejecting the meat and sin food will clean their bodies and mind and 11 selected monks will become a temple for the holy spirits during the J festival. Phuket Old Town hosts the biggest demonstration of the Chinese Descendants. Several corteges decorated with flowers are carrying the Goddess (the body temples where the holy spirit leaves) which gives away blessings to people who gather around to seek for the good luck. 11 main spirits walk around the Old Town with the iron spikes and knives in their body, walking on exploding firecrackers to show people that the spirit is not afraid of pain and suffering that humans go through.
This unique and authentic tradition is popular among locals and you can experience it by visiting mysterious Phuket!
